  1. Make sure you think about your entire space, not just the kitchen.  The adjacent rooms will affect the overall flow of the kitchen design.  Replacing your kitchen dining table with a sit up island is a great example of how to unclutter the space.
  2. Incorporating positive and negative spaces are important to make sure the kitchen is balanced.  Balancing your kitchen is accomplished by choosing a colour scheme or accent wall.  Also, when your cabinetry has different depths, whether it’s your oven hood or crown molding giving your kitchen that character you want to see.
  3. Lighting is a very important part of your design.  It can affect the positive and negative space in your kitchen as well as making it feel warm or cold.  Choosing the correct lighting for the space can help you avoid unwanted shadows affecting the colour of your cupboards.  Think about how a pendant fixture, track lighting or pot lights will fit into your space.
  4. The work triangle is a good suggestion for optimum space planning, however it is not a law.  It will offer a great flow to your kitchen but it doesn’t always work out.   It’s okay to think outside the triangle when designing your kitchen.
  5. Are you looking for a clean line or cozy kitchen?  You will need to determine whether you prefer a Contemporary or Traditional style kitchen.  Perhaps a Transitional style is a great compromise for your needs.
  6. When determining the door style and colour scheme of your cabinets, keep in mind that you will be looking at these cupboards for the next 15 years.  Showcasing your personality is important however the cabinet isn’t the place to go over the top.  Incorporating colourful countertop or unique accessories are a better way to express your personality and still have a kitchen that is pleasing for the whole family.
